Synopsis

Caroline Bird, the crotchety and stingy owner of Bird Milk Products, is not amused when her employees at the Dairyville factory, the oldest plant in the company, broadcast a special radio program in honor of her birthday. Employees Lulubelle, Scotty and Vera Vague, fed up with the terrible working conditions at Dairyville, cut into the broadcast, and Lulubelle asserts that Caroline is a "big hunk of cheese." Lane, the factory manager, cannot find the culprit, and so Caroline goes with her secretary, Dale Evans, to Dairyville. Because she has not been there in thirty-five years, Caroline knows that no one will recognize her, and she obtains a job at the factory under the name Anna Robbins. Dale is also hired by Pappy Cheshire, the kindly personnel manager who hired Caroline despite Lane's objections. As time passes, Dale becomes friendly with her new co-workers and realizes that their grievances against Caroline's policies are justified. Caroline, meanwhile, is gently pursued by the romantic-minded Pappy, who tries to make her feel at home in the company town. Back at corporate headquarters, Caroline's numerous vice-presidents are fearful that they will be fired unless they uncover the offender before Caroline does, and so they hire private detective Johnny Murphy and his partner, Ransom Sherman. Johnny and Ransom get jobs at the Dairyville factory, where Johnny quicky falls in love with Dale and Ransom is pursued by Vera. At a barn dance, Pappy shames Caroline into accepting money raised by her fellow workers to compensate for wages that Lane docked because of mistakes she made at work. Johnny, who has been trying to obtain information from Dale about the radio broadcast, confesses his love to her, and she is about to tell him that she shares his feelings when she learns his true identity and mission. Infuriated, Dale tells him that "Anna Robbins" is the culprit, and Caroline is subsequently fired by the head office. Pappy is forced to tell her the news, and an angry Caroline refuses his marriage proposal. After Caroline and Dale leave Dairyville, Lulubelle, Scotty and Vera discover what has transpired. Along with Pappy, they travel to the home office so that Lulubelle can confess her guilt and they can plead Anna's case. There, they admit all to Caroline, still believing that she is Anna, and she finally reveals her true identity. Johnny and Dale also reconcile when he shows her his paycheck, which he has made out to Anna Robbins. One year later, Johnny is happily married to Dale and has been made one of Caroline's vice-presidents, Lulubelle and Scotty are managing the Dairyville factory, and Caroline and Pappy are proudly running Bird Milk Products together.
