Synopsis

After a serial murderer, who kills his victims with poison from a blowgun, publicly dares Clayton's city leaders to appear at the Club Neptune, the mayor and his staff accept the challenge, and despite added police security, the park commissioner is slain. With Brodie, the chief of police, under fire, the city council openly reminisces aloud about his deceased female predecessor, Ma Pilkington. Newspaper publisher Henry Wright then decides to send Breezy Barton, his top reporter, to Horsetroft, Nevada, in order to bring back Ma's only daughter, June "Pilky" Pilkington. Despite the fact that Pilky is a complete klutz with no police training, she receives a hero's welcome in Clayton, having been built up by Wright's paper as the savior of the city. Brodie is not so enthusiastic about Pilky's arrival, however, and assigns bumbling police officer Mulligan to be her assistant. When the blowgun murderer promises to kill her at the Club Havana that night, a cowardly Pilky tries to sneak out of town, but is stopped by Breezy and Mulligan. The fiend misses Pilky, however, and kills another city council member instead. After falsely accusing a magazine photographer of the murder, a discredited Pilky suspects the mayor of using his cane, only to later find him dead at his desk. Learning that the murders began on the opening night of the theatrical production Voodoo Princess , Pilky rushes to the Miracle Theater, where she ends up ruining that night's performance. Wright then hires Oliver McQuestion, a radio quiz expert, as his new investigator, and orders Breezy to send Pilky back to Horsetroft. Pilky, however, mistakes Breezy's termination speech as a marriage proposal, so the reporter is forced to tell her that he is already engaged to Maybelle Clark, an actress. After theatrical producer Tommy Tucker is killed by the fiend at the train station, Pilky and Mulligan observe Maybelle recover a note that had fallen out of the dead man's pocket. The two then break into the Miracle Theater and search Maybelle's dressing room, without success. They are captured, however, by some gangster associates of Tommy, but Pilky escapes, and with the unintentional help of the townspeople, the gangsters are defeated. Pilky and Mulligan then rush back to city hall, crashing their car into a wall. Pilky collapses on the sidewalk, and Dr. Bleaker pronounces her dead, another victim of the blowgun killer. Pilky then jumps up and accuses Bleaker of being the real murderer, exposing the needle he has hidden in his hand. Having solved the case, Pilky prepares to go home, only to receive a telegram from the people of Horsetroft offering to buy her an expensive home in Clayton if she agrees to stay there the rest of her life.
