Synopsis
Attorney Henry Latham buys an expensive steak to impress an important new client that he will be having over for dinner, but is outraged at the price that his butcher is charging. From the shop, Henry telephones Mayor George Colton and asks him to provide him with a police escort, but neglects to mention that what the police will be "protecting" is his overpriced steak. When he later learns that city police officers were used for such a frivolous task, the mayor erupts in anger. The next day, Henry's wife Edna is humiliated when she goes to the butcher and discovers that Henry has closed his account at the store in protest over the high cost of meat. Edna exacts her revenge by buying the worst steak in the shop and serving it to her stubbornly principled husband. During dinner, Henry's son David pressures him to take him and his friend Georgie, the son of the mayor, on a deer hunting trip. Colton joins the hunting party, and things get off to an explosive start when the camping stove bursts into flames. Unaccustomed to the sights and sounds of the outdoors, the campers spend a restless night fearing an attack by wild animals. Meanwhile, Edna and daughter Barbara, fed up with their nosy, pestering neighbor, Minerva Bobbin, who believes that the Lathams have fallen on hard times, decide to go to the pricy Lazy-K dude ranch, located near Henry's campsite. Minerva heads for the mountains herself to deliver a letter to Henry. Out in the woods, Colton and Henry shoot at a deer, but on close inspection realize that they have killed a cow belonging to cowboy Cass McCreary, Barbara's new sweetheart. After David and Georgie find a dead deer and bring it back to camp, Henry persuades them to let him take the credit for the kill. Loaded down with their "kill," the inept hunters and their sons return home, as do Edna and Barbara, who bring Cass with them. Cass then spoils Henry's glory when he tells everyone that it was he who shot the deer.
