Synopsis
Jerry Haines, the heir to a department store fortune, is informed by his lawyers that the store is failing and he must take over its management. He flies to New York, insisting that he will start at the bottom to learn the business. Having seen attractive saleswoman Jean Martin in the music department, he decides to start work there. Using the last name Handley, Jerry makes friends with Jean, co-worker Gwen Logan and her boyfriend, elevator operator Christopher Cross. Chris tries to impress everyone by bragging about his close friendship with Jerry Haines, not knowing he is the same person as Jerry from the music department. Jerry uses this lie to make changes in store policy, then gives the credit to Chris. Believing that Chris really does have Jerry's ear, Gwen forces him into Jerry's office to ask for raises. Jerry is not there, but Chris overhears two of the managers plotting to take the store away from him. Meanwhile, Jerry and Jean fall in love. To celebrate, Jerry borrows some clothes from the store to give to Jean, but he seen by Sprague, the floorwalker, who sends the police after him. They arrest Jean and Jerry at the nightclub where they are having dinner, after which Chris visits them in jail and reveals the plot to take over the store. Jerry phones his lawyers, who arrange for his release from jail, and he takes a serious look at the books. He begs the bank for some extra time to pay back his loans, but they refuse. Then he discovers that Sigfried Hammerschlag, the shoplifter Sprague has just captured, is related to the Hammerschlag family that runs United Railways. In exchange for releasing Sigfried, Jerry asks for the use of a railroad car, then uses it to bring the store's goods to the customers outside the city, a plan suggested by Jean. The idea is successful, the store is saved and Jerry proposes to Jean.

Notes
The film's working titles were Come Up Smiling and Let's Pretend. Hugh Herbert also plays his father, Mr. Hammerschlag, and his two brothers in a comic scene. According to Daily Variety, ZaSu Pitts replaced Marie Wilson when the producers decided that Wilson was too young for the role. The Variety review notes that although Bobby Connolly was credited with designing dance numbers, no such numbers appeared in the film. This May account for the discrepancy in running times. Connolly received no credit on the viewed print. Contemporary sources refer to a scene in which Ann Sheridan and Georgia Caine as her matchmaking mother, pursue Melton, but the scene was not in the viewed print.
