Synopsis

Bob Randall is in temporary command of the Coast Guard ship Niobe when his commander's son, Lieutenant Mays, replaces him at the helm, and he is made first mate. When Bob's girl friend, Connie Dawson, is kidnapped by seal poachers who murder a wealthy yacht owner who protested their use of his yacht, Commander Mays orders the Niobe to search every vessel with which they come in contact. Lieutenant Mays searches a fishing boat owned by Hop Scotch, but believes the captain when he tells him his wife is sick in a bunk; in reality, Hop Scotch is working with the poachers and the "sick wife" is Connie lying under a blanket. An Eskimo nicknamed "Oil" signals the Niobe to come ashore because he has information for them regarding the poachers. Mays panics on the raft in rough water, a result of a childhood experience when he witnessed his mother's drowning, and he founders the raft. Bob rescues him, and when they return to the base, Mays resigns from his post and takes up flying for the Coast Guard because he is more comfortable in the air. At Bob's request, Commander Mays assigns him and fellow Coast Guard seaman Hogan to undercover work to locate the poachers. Hogan and Bob go in disguise as fishermen and search every local Alaskan island. One day, Mays notifies them by radio that he is landing due to engine trouble, and both man and plane disappear. On a nearby island, known to the Coast Guard as "pie a la mode," Bob contacts the poachers, but they imprison both him and Hogan with Mays, whom they had picked up earlier. Knowing the Coast Guard will soon find them, the head poacher, Phil Morgan, beats up both Hogan and Mays, who refuse to radio a false location to the base. After Morgan threatens to harm Connie if Bob does not comply, Bob sends a radio message in secret code to the base, informing them of the true location. The poachers arm themselves when the see the Coast Guard arriving, and are about to set off explosions in the mined harbor. A native girl friend of one of the poachers releases the hostages because she is resentful of the poachers, and Bob manages to throw a grenade into the cabin where the mine control is, killing Morgan. A fierce fight between the poachers and the Coast Guard ensues, and although Bob and Hogan are both injured, the Coast Guard is victorious. With the poachers eradicated, Hogan is promoted to bosun mate, and Bob is promoted and reunited with Connie.
