Synopsis

Charlie "Cyclone" Case, a superstitious cyclone insurance salesman from Tecumseh, gets a position in the city with another insurance company. Almost immediately, he saves lawyer Andrew Martine from being hit by a car. The grateful man buys a $100,000 policy, and his beautiful daughter Sylvia makes a date with Charlie. Charlie's thrill at his first big sale is quashed when he learns that Andrew is a bad risk because gangster "Sudden Mike" Slade has a contract out on him. Andrew promises Slade to keep incriminating papers on him confidential, but drops him as a client. The vengeful Slade then kidnaps Sylvia, asking for the papers as ransom. When he finds out Sylvia has been kidnapped, naïve Charlie is outraged and intends to get her back by informing Slade that he is breaking the law. He goes to Slade's cafe where he meets Zella Cameron, Slade's former girl friend who holds a grudge against Slade. Offering to help Charlie, Zella gets him to call rival gang leader Pete Caltek and inform him that Slade is paying his men that night, and then shows Charlie the door of Slade's office. As Charlie announces his intentions to Slade, Pete and his gang enter. The lights go out, and after some confusion, Charlie finds Zella shot in the shoulder. She gives him the address of Slade's mansion, where Sylvia is being held. Charlie bravely knocks out the gangster-doorman, but finds he is afraid of his own shadow. He locates Sylvia, but must hide when Slade arrives. Charlie continues hiding, finding a secret passageway, while a gun battle blazes around him between the rival gangs. Slade captures Charlie, but after Sylvia gives him the key to the hidden records, he promises not to harm her or kill Charlie. Charlie escapes and leads the police to Slade, but unsure whether he is actually part of the gang, the police wait until Charlie subdues Slade in a hand-to-hand fight before intervening. Charlie and Sylvia are then free to be together.
