Synopsis
When unemployed Midwesterner Madge Nelson arrives in the Western town of Roaring River in response to an advertisement for a wife, she discovers that Hugo Ennis, the intended husband, is absent. The advertisement was actually placed by a spiteful Sophy McGurn whose advances were rejected by Hugo. When Hugo returns home he suspects Madge is a blackmailer and denounces her. They quarrel and the frightened Madge shoots Hugo, but then quickly summons a doctor and nurses him. Spurred on by Sophy, Madge is branded an adventuress and narrowly escapes the townspeople's vengeance. Hugo changes public sentiment by announcing that he shot himself. Sophy's schemes are unsuccessful and Madge and Hugo find happinsss together.
