Synopsis

Movie star Ted Crosley is tired of playing college football heroes in the movies. He decides to quit acting and enrolls at Midland College under the assumed name of Ted Barry, much to the horror of his manager, Sam Lewis. Sam, hoping to end Ted's scholastic career quickly, calls the school and informs them of the star's impending arrival. Dean Worthington, who is about to lose his job as a result of having financed the construction of a new stadium for a losing football team, sees Ted as the kind of publicity that might save his job. On the train to Midland, Ted meets Jean Worthington, the dean's daughter, and immediately falls for her. When their train arrives at the Midland station, Ted is met with a gigantic reception. Sam and his screwball assistant, Willie Gumbatz, arrange a number of stunts in an attempt to get Ted expelled, including holding a wild party in his room. Despite their best attempts, Dean Worthington always looks the other way. Ted is railroaded onto the varsity football team, much to the chagrin of Biff Gordon, the team's star and Jean's jealous suitor. Although Ted was a great player in the movies, he proves to be nothing but a liability to the college team. When Jean forces Biff to pledge Ted into his fraternity, Sigma Chi, Biff, Sam and Willie send Ted blindfolded into the girls' dormitory as part of his fraternity initiation. Jean, however, quickly hides him, and her father covers up the incident. Ted is then given a fake fraternity pin, which he proudly gives to Jean. When the actor discovers the ruse, he punches Biff and quits school. Back in New York, Ted signs a radio contract, only to learn that at the entire football team has been suspended by Dean Worthington for the incident on the eve of the big game. Out of loyalty to his school and teammates, Ted goes back to Midland to square things with the dean. The team goes on to win the big game, and Ted takes the train back to New York, still thinking that Jean has deceived him. When Jean learns that Ted is about to lose his radio contract because of his last-minute return to Midland, she arranges for a radio broadcast from the football stadium. Sam, Willie and Jean overtake Ted's train in a hair-raising automobile ride, and Sam confesses all. After Sam professes Jean's innocence to Ted, the four race back to the college just in time for the broadcast. As Ted proclaims his love to Ann, she informs her future husband that the radio broadcast has already begun.

Notes

The working title of this film was College Follies of 1938. Daily Variety lists the running time as 103 minutes, probably in error. The real name of "Professor Quiz" was Dr. Craig Earl, who had a radio question and answer show on CBS in the 1930s.
