Synopsis

While participating in the planned launch of an X-15 manned rocket from Edwards Air Force Base, test pilots Matt Powell, Lee Brandon, and Ernest Wilde experience emotional and physical problems which they share with their wives and sweethearts. After setting a world's speed record for a pilot-controlled plane, Lee is killed in a crash while saving Matt's life and guiding the X-15 to a safe landing. Matt himself takes the X-15 into outer space for the final test.
