Feature directorial debut for actor Tom Noonan, the brother of playwright John Ford Noonan. "What Happened Was" was originally staged in New York City in 1992 by the Paradise Theater Company, a group Noonan and friends formed a decade earlier. The project was also workshopped at the Sundance Institute's 1992 writer's workshop.
