Synopsis
Roller McCray, a former steelworker, becomes a ruthlessly powerful man in the financial world. He crushes his rival, Walter Tabor; and when Roller refuses to relent, Tabor kills himself, leaving Anne, his wife, and a child, Richard. Roller tries to make amends for his actions, and believing she can practice his own philosophy and ruin him, Anne accepts his attentions, while plotting with John Willard, her husband's former partner. A strong friendship develops between Roller and little Richard, resulting in the child's unwittingly divulging financial information that Willard uses to destroy Roller. At a picnic Anne realizes her admiration for Roller and regrets having caused his downfall; ultimately, they are united because of the child's influence.
