Synopsis

After defeating the Gepidae in 566 A. D., Alboino, the Lombard king, offers peace on the condition that Rosamunde, daughter of the Gepidae king, Cunimondo, marry him. She refuses because she is in love with Amalche, a Gepidae warrior whose son she has borne. Her father threatens to have Amalche killed, however, and she consents to marry Alboino. Then Alboino's brother, the peace emissary, is killed through treachery, and the Lombard king swears vengeance on the Gepidae. He attacks, defeats them in a battle in which Cunimondo is killed, and takes Rosamunde as his bride. After the celebration feast, Amalche, who has escaped from imprisonment, breaks into the nuptial chamber, rescues Rosamunde, and kills Alboino. Amalche's followers again battle the Lombards and this time defeat them. As peace is restored, Rosamunde is crowned queen and is reunited with Amalche and their son.
