Synopsis
Phoebe Weyms, secretary to advertising executive Gordon Crouse, is in love with her boss. To attract Crouse's attention, Phoebe devises a publicity stunt involving Brenda and Cobina, the mystery singing stars from the "A Blind Date with Romance" radio program. Phoebe contacts the naval recruiting office and offers to unmask the singers, who have never been seen by their listeners, at a recruiting rally. Over Crouse's strenuous objections, Phoebe's plan is eagerly endorsed by Navy officers Lt. Philip Blaine and Ensign George "Tip" Landers. After the officers leave the room, Crouse informs Phoebe that the "Blind Date Girls," whose voices have sent thousands into rapture, have faces that would stop a clock. Undaunted, Phoebe decides to hire Jerry Gilbert and Kitty Leslie, two of the agency's advertising models, to pose as Brenda and Cobina, and have them mouth the words to the songs onstage as the real Brenda and Cobina sing from behind a curtain. When Jerry and Kitty, as Brenda and Cobina, are invited to a dance at the Officer's Club, the real Brenda and Cobina accompany them, posing as their singing instructors. After eyeing the eligible sailors at the club, Brenda and Cobina demand that they be provided with sailor boyfriends in return for cooperating with Phoebe's scheme. Convinced that Brenda and Cobina are important voice coaches, Commander Hawes assigns sailors Hambone Skelly and Daffy Dill to escort them. While visiting the radio station to watch Jerry and Kitty rehearse their routine, Hambone and Duffy notice Brenda and Cobina singing over a microphone in an adjacent studio and guess the truth. The sailors begin to court the singers, and after a whirlwind romance, they elope to Connecticut on the night of the big rally. Upon discovering that Brenda and Cobina are missing, Phoebe confesses the hoax to Commander Hawes. The commander is about to explain the ruse to the audience when Phoebe talks him out of it, and, after phoning Brenda and Cobina in Connecticut, arranges for them to sing their songs from a radio station there. The rally is a great success, and after the performance, the commander announces that Kitty and Jerry were only posing as the Blind Date Girls, who are prevented from making public appearances because of their radio contract. All ends happily as Kitty and Jerry are cheered as "Sweethearts of the Fleet" by the sailors, as well as Philip and Tip, and Crouse, impressed by Phoebe's ingenuity, takes her in his arms.
