Synopsis

Tom Allen, a hapless orphan accustomed to waiting in bread lines, is awarded an American Legion scholarship to the Culver Military Academy after his friend Tubby, who runs a bread line, discovers that Tom's father was Doc Allen, a war hero who saved his life. Embittered by his hard life, Tom accepts the scholarship to get free room and board. Tom resists the rigid discipline of the school, although he always carries his father's Congressional Medal of Honor, an award honoring his father's death in battle. Gradually, Tom's roommate, Bob Randolph, and the other boys at Culver instill a sense of pride and duty in Tom, and the boy soon comes to cherish the school's traditions and appreciate the sacrifice that his father made. One day, Tom's father appears and visits his old friend Tubby to inquire about his son. Doc, who has been suffering from shell shock, thinks that he is a deserter, but Tubby insists that he be treated at the veteran's hospital. Admitted under an assumed name, Doc meets his son when the boy comes to visit Tubby at Christmas. Several months pass and Doc, fearful of bringing disgrace to the boy, decides to disappear again. After sneaking out of the hospital, Doc decides to pay one last visit to his son, but when he begins raving, Tom realizes that Doc is his father and decides to run away with him. They are about to hop a freight train when Bob and another cadet detain them until Tubby arrives with papers to prove that the old man was a real hero. All ends happily as Doc is granted an honorable discharge and a pension, and Tom remains at Culver to finish his education.
