Synopsis

Tired of studying at Dorford College, and wanting "freedom from restraint and obedience," Brenda Reynolds, the spoiled, trouble-prone daughter of wealthy attorney James Reynolds, decides to quit school. Disobeying Dean Sophie Craig's order to remain in her dorm room, Brenda gets in her car and leaves Dorford. Meanwhile, Brenda's father, who, unknown to Brenda, is the leader of a racketeering operation, is defending one of his accomplices in court. Later, while announcing plans to open a new gambling house, James assigns his man Pete to take charge of the operation. He also instructs trigger-happy nightclub owner Nick Jordan to get the other gambling houses in line without the use of violence. Nick, however, ignores the order and kills a gambling house owner. As they speed away, Nick and his cohort, Soapy, run Brenda off the road. Captivated by Brenda's beauty, Nick stops to help her, and offers to drive her back to school. Brenda falls instantly in love with Nick and ends her relationship with her boyfriend, Bill Hunter. One night, at Nick's Cat's Paw nightclub, Dian Stephens, his girl friend, sees Nick and Brenda kissing. Jealous, Dian telephones James with the news, and he dismisses Nick, ordering him to leave town immediately. After walking out on Dian, Nick picks up Brenda, and the two make plans to cross the state line and get married. Soon after learning about the elopement, James gives an order to have Nick killed. Before leaving town, Nick and Brenda stop at Nick's office. Brenda waits in the car while Nick goes in, but when he does not respond to her honking, she goes inside and finds his dead body. As Brenda is the only person found at the scene of the murder, she is charged with the killing and jailed. James visits her in jail and tells her that he will defend her in court. During the trial, James realizes that things look bad for his daughter and finally confesses that he killed Nick. After his confession, Brenda is cleared of the charges and returns to Bill.
