Synopsis
At a grocery store in Prague, Alena, an attractive young woman, is having an affair with Vorell, the store's married manager. Although she is fully aware that Vorell is a scoundrel who has been stealing liquor from the stock shelves, Alena's physical need for him is so great that she is unable to break off their relationship. Then, an inventory is held, and it is discovered that 80 brandy bottles contain tea. When the two company auditors, Kurka and Bazant, question the employees, Alena panics and races from the store. Kurka, an intolerant man whose sense of duty has wrecked his marriage, immediately places the guilt on Alena. When the disturbed woman turns to Vorell for advice, he callously suggests that she assume the blame since she would only be placed on probation while he would be sent to prison. Believing her life to be ruined, she commits suicide. Her death profoundly moves Kurka, who finally sees himself as a man devoid of human understanding. Vorell is hardly affected, however; as life at the store returns to normal, he begins training a new assistant to replace Alena.
