Synopsis

In Bavaria in 1910, Gerald Harcourt and his bride, Marianne, run out of gasoline while touring through a forest, and Gerald sets out for help. During his absence, Marianne is terrified by the appearance of a man named Professor Zimmer who warns her that vampires inhabit an eerie chateau on the nearby mountain. After Gerald returns, they find refuge at an inn and receive a dinner invitation from Dr. Ravna, who lives at the chateau. Gerald and Marianne accept, and Dr. Ravna introduces his son Carl and daughter Sabena. After dinner, Carl plays the piano, and the music has a strange, hypnotic effect on Marianne. The next day they are invited to a masquerade ball. At the chateau, Gerald is drugged, and Marianne is put into a deep trance by Ravna, who prepares to sink his teeth into her neck. Gerald awakens but cannot find his wife and is forcibly thrown out of the castle. He enlists the aid of Professor Zimmer, and they return to the chateau where Gerald is attacked by a vampire but escapes by painting a cross on his chest with his own blood. Professor Zimmer finds Marianne, and they all rush back to the inn. The professor smears all exits to the castle with garlic, and, when he evokes a spell, hundreds of bats attack and put an end to the evil Ravna and his cult.
