Synopsis

Aspiring nightclub singer Gloria Dobson finds the going tough in New York City, as, with no "name" value, she has been unable to get a job. When her trunk is mistakenly delivered to the residence of playboy bachelor James Manning III, however, Gloria suddenly achieves the necessary notoriety. Jimmy's aunt Matilda is attempting to force her nephew into a society marriage to Louella Marvin, so Jimmy conspires with his butler, Michael, to introduce Gloria to his family as his "secret wife." Gloria goes along with the ruse until news of their "marriage" hits the papers. As revenge, the angry young woman arranges for a singing engagement under the name "Mrs. James Manning III." While Aunt Matilda is horrified at her "niece's" career, Gloria's veterinarian father, Dr. Dobson, arrives in New York with the full intention of moving in with his new "son-in-law." Jimmy's attorneys advise him that the only way out of his predicament is to arrange for a real "secret marriage," then a "quickie" divorce, and Gloria reluctantly agrees with their plans. With Dr. Dobson in tow, Gloria and Jimmy take to the road, pretending they are on their "honeymoon," when in reality, they are looking for an inconspicuous spot for their wedding. While the trio is stopped in a rural community, Dr. Dobson is called upon to deliver triplet colts from a farm mare, which becomes an unprecedented event in the state. As the birth draws media attention away from them, Jimmy and Gloria are quietly married by the local justice of the peace. Upon their return to New York, however, Gloria discovers that she has fallen in love with her husband, though he sees her as little more than a stop-gap to his aunt's matchmaking schemes. Gloria decides to resume her singing career, but Jimmy ruins her chance at recognition when he buys out her first nightclub engagement. An enraged Gloria then heads to Reno to get a divorce. Jimmy, in turn, comes to realize that he has fallen in love with Gloria. He and Dr. Dobson hop on a plane to catch up with Gloria, who is traveling by train. Along the way, Jimmy attempts to woo Gloria with a series of singing telegrams, which greatly annoys Gloria's fellow passengers. When Jimmy finally meets up with Gloria at a train station, the passengers encourage her to take her husband back, which she joyfully does.
