Laurie Parker, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron were previously attached as producers.

Tim Burton was previously attached to direct, but came back on board after his project "Ripley's Believe It or Not" was post-poned. Sam Mendes was in discussions to direct before Burton came back on board.

Production was temporarily halted when Depp's daughter, Lily, fell ill to a severe E-Coli infection.
