Synopsis

Classmates Mario and Franco become close friends after Franco saves Mario from the shame of losing a motorscooter race he boasted he could win. The two friends keep their mutual loyalty intact throughout the usual adolescent problems, and when Franco's father, a widower, has to leave for the Middle East on business, Mario persuades Franco's father that Franco will be better off left with Mario's family. Mario wants very much to win a school sports event but is humiliated in defeat. He then accuses Franco, the victor, of being disloyal, but his charges are disregarded by his classmates because of Franco's fine reputation as a sportsman. Full of resentment, Mario offends Franco, without really meaning it, by besmirching the memory of his mother, and Franco decides to leave with his father after all. The remorseful Mario goes to the airport to beg his friend's forgiveness but arrives as the plane takes off. [A second ending was filmed, in which Mario arrives at the airport in time, and both boys pledge to remain friends for life. It has not been determined which ending was used for U. S. release.]
