Synopsis

Businessman John Cleeve is found in South Africa suffering from partial amnesia and paralyzed below the waist. Certain that he has killed his partner, Derreck Alwyn, Cleeve returns to England under the care of Mary Winston. Mary's solicitor, Richard Harrison, shows them a photograph of Alwyn, evidently still alive. As she investigates a house with a hidden safe mentioned by Cleeve, Mary senses that Harrison is allied with Alwyn. Assisted by Mary's sister, Jane, Cleeve recovers his memory and the use of his legs. Jane discovers that the supposed Alwyn is, in fact, Cleeve, who, having incapacitated his partner in Africa, has returned to England to claim Alwyn's estate. In desperation, Cleeve attempts to kill the real Alwyn by pushing his wheelchair down a flight of steps, but is himself slain in the assault.
