That Little Band of Gold

Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle teamed with Mabel Normand in Keystone's That Little Band of Gold (1915). This time they play a happy young couple - happy that is, until they say "I do." After the wedding, Arbuckle turns into a carousing lout. That Little Band of Gold has quite a few funny things to say about marriage and divorce. As for Normand and Arbuckle, they are as charming as ever. According to Normand's biographer, Betty Fussell, in Mabel: Hollywood's First I-Don't-Care Girl, "the appeal of Fatty and Mabel was their innocence. [They] were cute," explains Fussell. "Instead of battling marrieds, they were kid sweethearts. When big Fatty kicked little Mabel in her rear, Mabel kicked back. She kicked back with a symbol of small-town rural American womanhood, the American pie." That Little Band of Gold also made use of some location shooting. Portions were filmed at a local courthouse and the opera interiors were actually shot at the Republic Theatre in Los Angeles.

Producer: Mack Sennett
Director: Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle
Cast: Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle (Hubby), Mabel Normand (Wifey), Ford Sterling (Gassy Gotrox), Ethel Madison (Maud Brightlights).
