Synopsis

Wealthy playboy John David meets the Wanderer, who claims that he is really John's conscience. They go to see John's fiancée, the Worldly Woman, and discover her making love to the Libertine. A fight breaks out, the Libertine dies and John, believing himself responsible, flees. He and Conscience then go to a small town, where John falls in love with the sheriff's daughter. They plan their marriage, but on the day of the wedding John publicly confesses to the murder, and so refuses to go through with the ceremony. He turns himself in to the authorities, who inform him that he has been cleared of all guilt. A servant, slighted by the Libertine, killed him while hiding in the room, and so now, with a clear conscience, John marries the sheriff's daughter.
