Synopsis

Upon the death of his Uncle Gabriel, Ernie Broughton, a proofreader of horror and sex novels, is summoned by sinister solicitor Sloane to attend the reading of the will. Accompanied by his bookie roommate, Syd Butler, Ernie arrives at Gabriel's gloomy mansion on the Yorkshire moors and encounters the somewhat mad members of the Broughton clan. Also on hand are Fisk, the clubfooted butler, and the uncle's nurse, Linda Dickson. The will is read, and the family learns that it has been disinherited. A violent electric storm then causes a power shortage, and the house is plunged into darkness. During the night, several members of the family are murdered by a masked killer, and in the morning it is discovered that the killer is Gabriel himself. (He has pretended to be dead in order to watch his greedy relatives squabble over his money.) Ernie prepares to take Linda back to London, but his plans are frustrated by the unexpected appearance of her boyfriend, pop singer Adam Faith.
