Synopsis

Wealthy Ella Venable is murdered and buried by her husband, Walter, and their servants, Clara and Andrew, all of whom want her inheritance. Ella's pet cat witnesses the crime, and when the victim's niece Beth visits the family's Victorian mansion with newspaperman Michael Latimer, she discovers that the formerly placid animal is now a ferocious beast. As the cat's behavior becomes increasingly ominous, the murderers decide the animal must be destroyed; however, the crafty beast forces Andrew into some quicksand and so terrifies Clara that she plunges to her death down a long flight of stairs. In desperation, Walter attempts to coerce some relatives into killing the cat and destroying Ella's will, which names Beth as sole beneficiary; but they, too, are eliminated by the animal. A heart attack brought on by panic confines Walter to bed, but the hissing cat continues menacing him until he dies. The animal then leads Beth and Michael to Ella's body.
