Synopsis

In a desperate attempt to recover a lost family fortune, orphaned brother and sister Michel and Catherine plot to defraud an insurance company of $6 million. Their plan is to wreck a family freighter captained by Catherine's middle-aged lover, Eric Mullen, so as to collect the insurance money. Before Eric leaves Hamburg he places a time bomb in the hold of his ship, setting it to explode in waters where mines are still known to exist. The ship loses 3 hours at the Kiel Canal, and Eric orders the time made up and pushes the ship toward its doom, knowing that he and his men can escape in lifeboats. As a result of the strain, one of the ship's boilers blows up, trapping a crew member in the wreckage. Suddenly repentant, Eric hurries to the hold and disconnects the bomb. He then brings the ship safely back to Hamburg, to discover that Catherine also has come to regret their dishonest scheme.
