Synopsis

While working in China for Nathan Goldberg, a New York Jewish importer, Chattfield Bruce comes to admire the Robin Hood philosophy of Wong Lee, who gives to the poor all the food, clothing and money that he steals from the rich. After Chattfield informs Wong Lee of a betrayal among his gang, Wong Lee gives him a ring that is guaranteed to give the wearer the allegiance of any Chinese throughout the world. After returning to New York, Chattfield decides to redistribute the nation's wealth with the help of Wong Lee's son, who opens a store in Chinatown as the base of operations for Chattfield's work. Goldberg, who cheats his customers of thousands of dollars annually, has social aspirations for his daughter. Chattfield arranges for Wong Lee's son to be a waiter at a lawn party Goldberg gives for his daughter's friend, Marjorie Woods, so that he can substitute a fake necklace for an expressive one belonging to Miss Goldberg. In plotting the robbery, Chattfield begins a romance with Marjorie. Nevertheless, he steals the necklace, but then confesses everything to Marjorie, who convinces him to give up his illegal philanthropy for a safer, although less charitable profession, marriage.
