Synopsis

After the death of their mother, Polly Biggs and her younger brother and sisters go to live with their uncle, Mayor Hoadley, a crooked politician who takes them in for the sake of appearances. Polly and the children are treated so badly by the Hoadleys that they run away to the poorhouse. After a fire destroys their sanctuary, the children wander to a bungalow in the woods owned by John Oxmore, whose father is running against Mayor Hoadley. Learning of the children's predicament, John allows them to spend the night. In the meantime, Hawkins, a ward boss, is murdered by Mayor Hoadley, who uses John's cane to implicate him in the crime. Fearing that he will compromise Polly, John refuses to tell where he was on the night of the crime, and is arrested for the murder. When Polly learns of the false accusations, she testifies on John's behalf. His alibi established, John is freed and Hoadley is arrested for the murder.
