Synopsis

In 1810 as the Austrian army invades Italy, Countess Mariana Beltrami is married to Count Adrian Murillo before he leaves for the front. The imperious and handsome General Dostal makes his headquarters at the castle of Countess Beltrami and immediately vies for her favor with the Austrian Crown Prince, a member of his staff. Count Murillo breaks through the Austrian lines and returns to the castle; he is discovered and ordered shot as a spy. The countess tells of a similar invasion by the French when her grandmother saved her husband by appearing before a general wearing only an ermine coat. The drunken Austrian general dreams of a similar experience, and believing it to be real, he spares Count Murillo's life.
