Synopsis
Mamie Taylor, paid companion and good friend to Marian Forrest, is in love with Marian's brother, Jack, while Marian's affections are all directed toward Eric Van Norden, a bachelor who intends to remain that way. Eddie Lannigan, a blackmailer, threatens to expose Mamie's past, and she leaves the Forrest home, preparing to jump off a bridge. Van Norden chances by and, preventing the suicide, takes Mamie to his rooms. Jack Forrest follows them and accuses Van Norden of philandering. Mamie leaves by the back door, and Marian steps from the bedroom to tell her brother (falsely) that she and Van Norden were married that very afternoon. Jack returns to Mamie, and Van Norden realizes that he must at last marry Marian in order to protect her reputation.
