Patti Labelle was born in 1944 in a black working-class neighborhood in Philadelphia and grew up to be one of the most enduring recording artists of her time. Patti worshiped her father and learned to sing on his lap. Though too shy to raise her hand in class, she volunteered to sing at a high school talent show and blew the audience away. With a singing career including performances with such artists as James Brown, Rolling Stones and Elton John -- Patti's career is still going strong, with sold-out concerts.
