Synopsis

Hans Christian Anderson's tale of "The Little Mermaid" is loosely adapted for this modern story of a 5-year-old girl named Desi who is still hurting over the loss of her father, who recently passed away. She moves with her mother Rhonda back to the family home where Rhonda grew up. There, Desi's grandmother, Trish, struggles to deal with her grief-stricken daughter. To make matters worse, Desi feels responsible for her father leaving without saying goodbye. Desi writes a letter to her father and leaves it at his gravesite, but doesn't understand why it hasn't made it to heaven. At a country fair, a kind stranger gives Desi a silver Little Mermaid balloon. Desi decides this will make a perfect vehicle to get the letter to her father in heaven. While on a hunting trip in Mermaid, Canada, Wade MacKinnon finds Desi's balloon and letter. The MacKinnon family decides to answer Desi's letter to her father and help heal the little girl's breaking heart.
