Synopsis

Christy Huddleston recounts the tales of her youth in early 20th century Tennessee to her daughter. It is the year 1912, and Christy, a young missionary comes to Cutter Gap, a fiercely traditional, independent Appalachian community. Christy is especially met with suspicion when she supports a move to connect the town with a paved road. When a free-spirited woman aviator named Harriet Quimby flies to Cutter Gap, she turns the community on its ear. This modern woman is refreshing and thrilling for young Christy but after a series of robberies occur, Christy is pitted against the community and is blamed as the source of the crime spree. To make matters worse, Harriet is competing with Christy for Dr. MacNeil's heart. Christy becomes dispirited and contemplates returning home to North Carolina, but reconsiders. Harriet decides to leave, but before she does, she showers the children of Cutter Gap with Christmas gifts, leaving them to think that maybe there is a Santa Claus.
