Synopsis

Jan, a sober and industrious Swedish farmer, works long hours tilling the soil, knowing neither joy nor sorrow. A daughter, Glory, is born to him, and the drudgery of his life turns to happiness. Years later, the landlord of the estate is accidentally killed, and his son withdraws credit from the farmers, demanding payment of all notes immediately. To prevent their eviction, Glory goes to the city to find work. She is followed by Lars, the new landlord, and money arrives in time to allow Jan to keep his land. Glory does not return, and Lars loses his sanity, playing at lords and ladies with the neighborhood children. Time passes, and Glory finally comes home, dressed in finery. Suspected of being a fallen woman, she is driven away by the neighbors and boards a boat for the mainland. Lars is a passenger on the boat and accidentally falls to his death; Jan tries to follow Glory but falls from the dock and drowns. Glory one day returns and marries her childhood sweetheart.
