Synopsis

Determined to break up the romance between her daughter Barbara and Raymond Phiffier, a rather unstable poodle-sitter, Mrs. Phoebe Tuttle has Raymond hired as a jack-of-all-trades at one of the department stores she owns. Although the store manager, Mr. Quimby, gives Raymond numerous impossible tasks, he not only somehow comes through but even strikes up a friendship with Barbara's father, the titular head of the store. After Barbara warns her mother not to cause Raymond further trouble, he disgraces himself when a vacuum cleaner he is demonstrating runs amok, nearly causing a riot. Mrs. Tuttle fires him, but henpecked Mr. Tuttle does an about-face by telling off his wife. The entire family apologizes to Raymond as they join his poodle-walking rounds.
