> Ruggles of Red Gap (1935) was based on Harry Leon Wilson's serialized story in the Saturday Evening Post, which was first published on December 26, 1914. It was such a success that it was turned into a novel, becoming a best-seller in 1915. That same year, Ruggles of Red Gap was turned into a Broadway musical by Harrison Rhoades, but only ran for 33 performances at the Fulton Theater from December 25, 1915 to January 22, 1916.

> The first film adaptation of the novel was as a silent by the Essanay company in 1918, starring Rod LaRoque and Taylor Holmes. In 1923, Paramount Pictures made their own version with legendary character actor Edward Everett Horton as Ruggles. In 1957, it was produced for television with Michael Redgrave, Peter Lawford, Jane Powell and Imogene Coca. The best known version of Ruggles of Red Gap was made by Paramount in 1935, and starred Charles Laughton, Charlie Ruggles, Mary Boland, Roland Young and Zasu Pitts.
