> At the start of the filming of My Man Godfrey, director Gregory La Cava and actor William Powell had a slight disagreement on how Powell was playing Godfrey. La Cava told the actor, "You haven't found Godfrey yet!" The two sat down one evening over some Scotch to discuss the character. Hours later (after they had finished a bottle or two), they finally reached perfect agreement on Godfrey's character. The next morning La Cava arrived at the studio with a terrible headache but determined to get in a good day's shooting on the picture. But Powell failed to show up for work. Finally a telegram from Powell was delivered to La Cava which read: WE MAY HAVE FOUND GODFREY LAST NIGHT BUT WE LOST POWELL. SEE YOU TOMORROW.
> In later years, Carole Lombard would comment on My Man Godfrey, saying "Irene in Godfrey was, I'd say, the most difficult part I ever played. Because Irene was a complicated and, believe it or not, essentially a tragic person." Lombard saw not only Irene's nuttiness but also her alienation from the real world and ordinary people. After the success of My Man Godfrey, Lombard would get top billing in all of her films.
> For the scene where Godfrey carries Irene over this shoulder up the stairs and to her bedroom, a stunt double was used for William Powell.
> When My Man Godfrey opened in London it was so popular it caused traffic jams in Leicester Square near the theatre where it was showing.
