On a break from his gig as the warden, on-leave Army officer Steve (Pat O’Brien) drops by to visit night club singer May (Ann Sheridan), for just their second meeting, her not knowing his job, or that her troubled brother (Humphrey Bogart) is one of his inmates, in San Quentin, 1937.

Just sentenced Hansen (Joe Sawyer) and Red (Humphrey Bogart) arrive at the famous prison, the new reform-minded warden Jameson (Pat O’Brien), an on-leave Army officer, recognizes him as the brother of a girl (Ann Sheridan) he was romancing when he was arrested, in San Quentin, 1937.
