Synopsis

Stanley Thrumm is a mild-mannered Englishman who works as a tour guide for a second-rate travel agency. While conducting a bus trip through the Italian Riviera, he enters a gambling casino to look for one of his drunken American passengers. Forced to pay admission, and handed chips instead of change, he places a bet, wins, bets again, and continues playing until he has parlayed his small wager into 30,000 lire. Unknown to him, he has been closely watched by a beautiful but scheming adventuress, Carla Moretti, who, after hastily arranging a "chance" meeting, agrees to meet him when his tour arrives in Rome. Carla then contacts her gigolo ex-husband, Remo, and awaits her innocent victim. Once there the love-struck Stanley is easily persuaded to invest his money in Switzerland where he won't have to pay any taxes on it. To avoid Italian customs, he hides his winnings in a giant stuffed dog belonging to one of his tourists, a predatory husband-hunter named Miss Sparrow. After crossing the border, Stanley accepts a worthless receipt from Remo in exchange for his money. But he soon learns of the deception and chases Remo onto a ski lift where a wild fight ensues that puts both men into a hospital. Despite his injuries, Stanley continues to beat Remo until he confesses his complicity with Carla. Sick at heart, Stanley returns to his hotel and learns that he has been fired as the result of a letter the jealous Miss Sparrow wrote to his company. All ends well as Carla brings back his money and agrees to return with him to England where he plans to open a small travel agency of his own.
