Synopsis

Faced with a police department investigation of his brutal methods, detective Jim Schuyler resigns and accepts a job from court lawyer Tennessee Fredericks. Schuyler's assignment is to guard Rena Westabrook, who is on trial for murdering her wealthy husband with the assistance of her lover, playboy Jonathan Fleming. Rena claims, however, that on the night of the murder, she and Jonathan attended the theater and were later seen at a bar by Sean Magruder. After fighting off an assailant and finding Magruder's dead body in his car, Schuyler forces Jonathan to confess that he had planned to blackmail Mr. Westabrook because of his tainted sexual activities but had been dissuaded by Rena. Now convinced of Rena's innocence, Schuyler sets out to find the real culprit while the trial is in progress. Schuyler discovers that the murderers are part of a gang that had disposed of Finchley, a wealthy Englishman, and substituted an imposter in a plot to steal the Finchley fortune. When Westabrook accidentally learned their secret, he was killed, and Magruder was slain because he was Rena's alibi. Once Rena is acquitted, the gang attempts to kill her as she returns home; but Schuyler commandeers a helicopter, alerts the police, and shoots down a rifleman as he is about to fire at Rena.
