Synopsis
When timber heiress Elsie Barlow's profits are endangered by the skulduggery of rival lumbermen Albert and Bart Norton, the girl cables her uncle Herbert in England to come to Canada and take charge. As Elsie awaits the arrival of her uncle, whom she has never seen, the body of a dead man bearing Elsie's cable is found at the hotel, and everyone assumes that the corpse is Herbert. North West Mounted Police Ken Strange and Dan MacKenzie begin an inquest into the murder, questioning the Norton brothers; Freddie, a demented vagabond; and Gordon Hayes, the representative of a lumber company offering to buy the Barlow land. Soon afterward, Herbert and his wife Martha arrive and identify the dead man as Robert Druid, the Barlows' secretary, whom Herbert had sent ahead when Martha fell ill in Vancouver. Strange and MacKenzie then ask for the loan of Barlow's dog King to help with their investigation. King leads MacKenzie to the Barlow barn, where the Mountie is overpowered by the murderer and killed with a blow of a hammer. When Strange finds MacKenzie's body, he arrests Albert Norton, who had been at the Barlow house at the time of the murder. That night, Bart breaks his brother out of jail, and they sneak into the Barlow house just as an attempt is made to strangle Elsie in her bed. Strange and his new assistant, Williams, arrive just in time to rescue Elsie and apprehend the Nortons, but then Strange turns to Barlow and unmasks him as Robert Druid, the Barlows' secretary. Strange explains that after matching the fingerprints from Barlow's passport with those found on the hammer used to murder MacKenzie, he scrutinized Barlow's passport and found the picture to be falsified. Strange continues that Druid's motive was to gain control of the Barlow lands and marry Martha. To prove his accusations, Strange commands King to sniff out Elsie's would-be murderer, and the dog lunges at Druid. At that moment, Martha grabs a gun, and Druid runs from the house, but is captured by King. With the Nortons and Druid brought to justice, Elsie's company begins to prosper, and she and Strange plan their wedding.
