Crucial scene nicely wrought by director Richard Boleslawski, Fredric March, whom we know is really the reformed criminal Valjean, now known as M. Madeleine, a prosperous business owner, performs a rescue, stirring the memory of the magistrate Javert (Charles Laughton), his one-time jailer, in 20th Century-Fox’s Les Miserables, 1935.
