Telluride Film Festival Tribute - 9/3

Since 1998 TCM has celebrated the Telluride Film Festival, held each Labor Day weekend in Telluride, Colorado. Once again, we salute "the rarest jewel in the crown" of film festivals, now in its 39th year, with a 24-hour tribute to honorees and events of past years. The lineup of features, documentaries and shorts showcases the many reasons for which films are selected for inclusion at Telluride, and thus mirrors the diversity of the festival.

This year's programming features two TCM premieres - Shadows in Paradise (1990) by Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki (his recent arthouse hit Le Havre and Sally Potter's Orlando (1992) which features a stunning title-role performance by Tilda Swinton, who was honored in 2011.

Among the many other films in the TCM tribute are three outstanding documentaries. Peggy Stern's Chuck Jones: Memories of Childhood (2009) focuses on the great animator who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this month, and who is the subject of an ongoing tribute at the festival.

The Tramp and the Dictator, a documentary about the making of Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator (1940), had its premiere at Telluride in 2002, and was co-directed by Kevin Brownlow, who serves on the festival's Council of Advisors. Cameraman: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff, Craig McCall's brilliant study of the cinematographer/director, premiered at Telluride in 2010.
