The Science of Movie Making Co-Hosted by Ben Burtt & Craig Barron

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Presents the Science of Movie Making: Co-Hosted by Ben Burtt and Craig Barron.

In partnership with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, TCM is proud to present this evening of programming co-hosted by two Academy Award® winners: sound designer Ben Burtt (E.T.: TheExtra-Terrestrial, 1982; Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, 1989); and visual effects supervisor Craig Barron (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, 2008). Among Burtt's numerous other illustrious credits are all the titles in the Star Wars series and Wall-E (2008). Barron's include Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Dracula (1992) and Titanic (1997).

The films Burtt and Barron will introduce and discuss with TCM host Robert Osborne are among those they have hosted in lively multi-media presentations through outreach programs of the Academy's Science and Technology Council.

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) is significant in Burtt's career because it was his "favorite movie sound," the zing of Robin's arrows, that made him aware of the possibilities of sound effects. Similarly, after hearing the resonant rifle shots in Gunga Din (1939), he experimented with those sounds until he found what he needed for the Indiana Jones films.

Barron gained inspiration from Linwood G. Dunn, the opticals genius behind the visuals of Citizen Kane (1941), which were so natural as to be "invisible in service of the story." He will also discuss the "signature visual effects" of Forbidden Planet (1956), which combined animation by Disney artist Joshua Meador with live-action photography.
