The Immigrant Experience - Wednesdays in June

In the tradition of programming themes focused on the human experience, such as "Hard Times: Life in the Depression" and "Race and Hollywood: Native American Images in Film," TCM presents "The Immigrant Experience," a festival exploring the forces that brought people from all over the world to our shores and the hardships and joys faced in adjusting to a new life in America.

The festival is divided into sub-themes. "Coming to America" is beautifully exemplified by America, America (1963), Elia Kazan's Oscar®winning study of a young Greek immigrant (played by Stathis Giallelis and based on Kazan's uncle) who emigrates to the U.S. in the late 19th century. "Facing Discrimination" is the lot of the immigrants of many nationalities in French director Louis Malle's And the Pursuit of Happiness (1986, TCM premiere), which features interviews with new arrivals from various countries including Mexico, Cuba, Cambodia and West Ghana.

"Immigrant Families" include the Norwegian clan of I Remember Mama (1948), based on the charming memoir by Kathryn Forbes and starring Irene Dunne as an indomitable matriarch in turnof- the-century San Francisco. "The Lighter Side" features two more TCM premieres. The musical Paddy O'Day (1935) stars Jane Withers as a young Irish girl who tangles with immigration officials in New York City and features Rita Hayworth, then billed as Rita Cansino, whose father was a real-life immigrant from Spain. Anything Can Happen (1952), a comedy based on a memoir by George Papashvily, stars Jose Ferrer as a Georgian immigrant trying to make it in America. The latter film won a special Golden Globe as "Best Film Promoting International Understanding."
