Stars Behind Bars - Tuesdays in January
Roles as prisoners frequently result in Oscar®-worthy performances. Playing fellow inmates in Cool Hand Luke (1967) led to an Academy Award® for George Kennedy and a nomination for Paul Newman. Also nominated for playing prisoners: Paul Muni for I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932), and Burt Lancaster and Telly Savalas for Birdman of Alcatraz (1962). On the distaff side, Eleanor Parker was nominated for Caged (1950). TCM premieres in this Spotlight are Riot in Cell Block 11 (1954), featuring Neville Brand as the leader of a prisoner protest; Brubaker (1980), starring Robert Redford as a warden trying to clean up a corrupt prison system; and Doin' Time (1985), with Jeff Altman as an inmate in a penitentiary that seems to be run by the convicts.
