Guest Programmer: Richard Linklater

OscarĀ®-nominated writer-director Richard Linklater, this month's TCM Guest Programmer, is recognized as one of the key figures of the American independent cinema movement of the 1990s and continues to create provocative and meaningful films. Born in Houston, Texas, he is known for such movies as Slacker (1991), Dazed and Confused (1993), Before Sunrise (1995) and its sequels, Me and Orson Welles (2008) and Bernie (2011).

Linklater chooses Some Came Running (1958) because it's a "wonderful melodrama" with "a great film artist behind it"-- director Vincente Minnelli, who draws superlative performances from stars Frank Sinatra, Shirley MacLaine and Dean Martin. The Asphalt Jungle (1950), "a great heist film," is the work of another of Linklater's favorite filmmakers, John Huston, "a hero to all directors." Yet another master, Ingmar Bergman, gave us Fanny and Alexander (1982), "a beautiful recreation of 1906 Sweden" and "one of the best films about a child's perspective on the world."
