grandfather: James Shearer. Carpenter, later a successful timber merchant. Grew up in northern highlands of Scotland; moved to Canada in 1843.
father: Andrew Shearer. Born c. 1864; died in 1944; assumed father's business, which later failed; divorced from Shearer's mother; later remarried c. 1931; second wife's name was Elizabeth.
mother: Edith Shearer. Born in 1873 in Islington, Ontario, Canada; left husband after his business failed and he was unable to provide for them.
sister: Norma Shearer. Actor. Popular star of the 1920s and 30s; Oscar winner for "The Divorcee" (1930); married to producer Irving Thalberg from 1927 until his death in 1936.
sister: Athole Shearer. At one time married to film director Howard Hawks; later institutionalized with mental health problems.
