Offering not much context, director Kenji Mizoguchi brings his lead actor (Shotaro Hanayagi) into a Kabuki theater performance in late 19th century Tokyo, in which his father (Gonjuro Kawarazaki) plays the lead, opening the long-lost and highly acclaimed The Story Of The Last Chrysanthemums, 1939.
