Cast & Crew
When Vera Baker, an aspiring young singer who works as a club hostess in London, comes into possession of a wallet belonging to Michael Thorne, a former theatrical producer presently working as a government official, Vera's friend Mabel persuades her to return the wallet personally. Hoping to win an audition with Michael, Vera goes to his apartment, but Michael, who has just broken up with his sweetheart, Caroline Marshall, is determined to avoid all women and therefore refuses to allow her to perform. While Vera is at the apartment, a gang of thieves led by a man named Hampion break in and knock her and Michael unconscious. Planning to steal a valuable painting owned by Michael, the thieves ransack the apartment, but are unable to locate the artwork. Upon regaining consciousness, Michael deposits the painting in the office safe at the Ministry. Taking pity on Vera, Mrs. Trout, Michael's housekeeper, invites her back for an audition. As Vera is about to sing, however, a trash truck drives down the street and Mrs. Trout asks Vera to give the driver the love letters that Caroline wrote to Michael. Hampion, passing by, hears Vera singing over the microphone of the trash truck and invites her to perform at a charity concert. Michael also attends the concert, and is enticed by Hampion to assist in a magic trick. When Michael goes backstage, the thieves knock him unconscious, and a member of the gang, disguised as Michael, then walks into the Ministry building and steals the painting. Backstage, as the thieves discuss their plans to eliminate Michael, Vera overhears their conversation and summons the police. After Michael is revived and the painting recovered, Vera mounts the stage and sings. Standing in the wings, Michael realizes that not only does she possess a wonderful voice, but that he has fallen in love with her.
